Band Tee Face Mask Tutorial - No Sewing Needed

Wearing face masks has become so important because of the COVID-19 outbreak, but I don't purchase or waste important medical supplies needed by hospital workers, and all essential workers putting themselves out there.

We do our part and stay home, social distancing to the extreme. I’ve been getting creative using what I already have to make my own face coverings for quick dog walks, doing the laundry, and getting the mail.

"The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance."

I’ve had this Metallica tee for a while and used to love wearing it, but it got bleached in an awkward place so it looks weird and messy. I decided to repurpose it and turn it into fabric face masks. My family and I will benefit from this project instead of leaving this tee I don’t wear hidden away in my closet for another year or longer!

This 1 tee can be turned into more than 3 masks. More experienced fabric modifiers can probably make more, and even better masks using a sewing machine, or hand sewing techniques. I’m still super new at this and found a way to do it ditching all that.

All you need is a pair of scissors (xtra points for fabric scissors!), a measuring instrument, a cotton tee, and some patience! It doesn’t take too long, but don’t rush yourself when making it. We want the mask to be able to handle going into the laundry often.

For this tutorial I’m starting with the most interesting part of the tee, the graphic + logo, and making the first mask on camera to show you how I do it! Thank you @kenexplorer for helping me when I needed it behind-the-scenes. You're the best!!

The CDC recommends using cotton fabric, so I also chose this shirt since it’s cotton. Keep in mind this face mask will not keep someone 100% safe from viruses but it is more helpful, and more considerate than not wearing any covering at all if you cannot keep at least 6 feet apart from others at all times. This fabric face mask can be layered over another mask if needed.

CDC on Homemade Cloth Face Coverings

CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission.

CDC also advises the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others.  Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an additional, voluntary public health measure.

Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.

Cloth face coverings should—

  • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face

  • be secured with ties or ear loops

  • include multiple layers of fabric

  • allow for breathing without restriction

  • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape
